Yesterday we had a family outing to Bavaria, to its biggest lake, Chiemsee. Walter's other daughter Christiane and her boyfirend Simon, from Munich met us there. We all went from Prien on a boat across to the island of Herreninsel.
What a perfect day, for sailing on the lake or visiting the Palace of King Ludwig 11, Herrenchiemnsee, built over seven years in the 19th century, but never finished as the king ran out of money. He had grand ideas of building his own version of the Place at Versailles, but he had more money than sense! And he died suddenly in mysterious circumstances!
It was so over the top and, as he lived alone and only spent a few days there, it was ridiculous!
However it was hard not to be impressed by the Spiegelgalerie, hall of a thousand mirrors. It took a team of servants 30 minutes to light all 20,000 candles, and all for the king to enjoy, as he didn't like company and he lived alone.
I must say I was also impressed by a huge chandelier which weighed over 500 kg and a huge chandelier made of porcelain which was incredibly beautiful.
It is no wonder the French had a revolution, if this palace is anything to go by.
The best part was the ride in horse drawn wagon between the boat and the castle. Too hot to walk as it turned out to be about 29 degrees and exhausting.
After our guided tour of the castle we enjoyed a late lunch, on a terrace overlooking the lake, by then dotted with hundreds of yachts. This time I played it safe and chose Wiener schnitzel.
I managed to sit in the back of the car on the way home. It is terrifying sitting in the front passenger seat (which is of course on the right) on the autobahn, with a limit of 130 on the Austrian side, and no limit at all once we were in Germany.
